Gelcoat is not paint. It is a thick pigmented resin layer, and it is porous — which is exactly why it chalks and fades so quickly in a saltwater, high-UV environment like Tampa Bay. A boat kept in the water here ages faster than most owners expect.

What actually attacks a hull

• UV. The primary cause of oxidation — that chalky, faded surface that rubs off white on your hand.
• Salt. Corrosive to hardware and fittings, and it accelerates everything else.
• The waterline. Scum, algae and staining collect where the hull meets the water and set hard if left.
• Rain and hard water. Mineral spotting bakes onto horizontal surfaces in the sun.

What a proper marine detail includes

A real hull service is more than a wash. It means a full wash down, a dedicated waterline treatment for scum and staining, oxidation removal by machine where the gelcoat has gone chalky, then a sealant or marine ceramic coating to slow the whole cycle down again. Interiors and vinyl need their own attention — mildew and UV cracking are the two things that ruin a cockpit.

Oxidation is removable, but it is not free. Every compounding pass takes gelcoat off, and gelcoat is finite. Protecting early is far cheaper than restoring later.

How often

For a boat that stays in Tampa Bay water: a wash after saltwater use, a proper detail two to three times a year, and protection kept current. A coated hull can stretch that considerably because the surface stays slick and contaminants struggle to bond — which matters most at the waterline, where the hardest work usually is.
