Love Bug Season in Florida: Getting Them Off Without Wrecking Your Paint
Love bugs are acidic and they etch clear coat within days. Here is how to remove them safely, and how to make the next season far less painful.

Twice a year — roughly May and again in September — Florida drivers get a windscreen and front bumper full of love bugs. They are more than an eyesore. Their remains are acidic, and once they bake onto a hot bumper in Florida sun they will etch into clear coat surprisingly fast.
Why they damage paint
A love bug carcass is acidic on its own, and it gets worse as it decomposes. Add a black bumper sitting at 140°F in direct sun and you have heat accelerating a mild acid sitting directly on your clear coat. Left for a week or two in peak season, that leaves permanent etching that only polishing will remove.
The damage timeline is days, not months. Getting them off within 48 hours is the single most useful thing you can do.
How to remove them safely
- Soak first, never scrub dry. Lay a wet microfibre towel over the bumper for five minutes to soften the remains.
- Wash top-down with a pH-neutral soap and plenty of lubrication so you are not dragging grit across the paint.
- Use a dedicated bug remover on the front end, and let it dwell — do not let it dry on the surface.
- Finish with a clean rinse and dry with a soft towel rather than letting Florida sun spot the panel.
What not to do
Dryer sheets, scouring pads, bug sponges, and aggressive scrubbing all remove love bugs. They also put fine scratches into your clear coat while doing it, which is why cars that survive several seasons of that treatment develop a hazy, swirled front end. If you have already got that haze, it is fixable — that is exactly what paint correction does.
Making next season easier
A protected surface is a slick surface, and bugs do not bond to it nearly as well. A sealant will make removal noticeably easier for several months. A ceramic coating goes further — the bugs still land, but they rinse off with far less contact, which means far fewer chances to scratch the paint getting them off.
If you only do one thing before May and September, get protection on the front end. It converts a scrubbing job into a rinsing job.
