How Often Should You Detail Your Car in Florida?

Florida sun, salt air and afternoon storms are harder on paint and interiors than most climates. A realistic schedule for washing, detailing and protecting.

The honest answer is more often than in most of the country, and the reason is not just heat. Florida combines intense UV, high humidity, salt in the air near the coast, daily summer rain, and love bug season twice a year. Each of those attacks a different part of your car.

A realistic schedule

  • Every 1–2 weeks: a proper hand wash. This is the single highest-value habit — it removes contaminants before they bond or etch.
  • Every 3–4 months: a full detail, inside and out, with protection reapplied.
  • Every 6–12 months: reassess paint protection. Sealant will need renewing; a coating will not.
  • Twice a year, before May and September: get the front end protected ahead of love bug season.

Why washing matters more than detailing

People often skip washes and book an occasional big detail. That is backwards. Most paint damage is cumulative and preventable — bird droppings, bug remains, and sprinkler water spots all etch clear coat if they sit. A regular wash prevents damage. A detail corrects it after the fact, which costs more.

Sprinkler water is worse than rain. It is often hard water, and the mineral spotting it leaves behind bakes on fast in direct sun.

Interiors take a beating too

Florida sun is brutal on dashboards, and humidity is what turns a damp footwell into a smell. Interior UV protection is not cosmetic here — it is what stops a dashboard cracking and leather drying out over a few summers. If your car lives outside, treat interior protection as seriously as paint protection.

If you only do one thing

Get on a recurring wash schedule and keep protection current. A car that is washed regularly and stays protected rarely needs expensive correction work. A car that is neglected for two years in this climate almost always does.
